Drink and Drug Driver Campaign

Alert message sent 17/12/2018 21:44:00

Information sent on behalf of Notts Police

More than 30 motorists were arrested during the first week of a Christmas drink and drug drive campaign in the county and now Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service are set up to step up the efforts to highlight the dangers and educate people about the risks and consequences.

A total of 32 motorists were arrested across the county for drink driving during the first seven days of December, with a further six motorists arrested for drug driving. Of the 38 arrests, one motorist was arrested for drink and drug driving.

Of the 38 motorists arrested a total of 24 were charged and bailed to appear at court, 11 were released under investigation and three were refused charge.

The drivers wee arrested in the following areas: Forest Town, Mansfield, Nottingham, Daybrook, Worksop, Newark, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Carlton, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Chilwell, West Bridgford, Hucknall and Bulwell.

Following last years successful joint Christmas drink drive campaign our friendly officers will again be encouraging people to take part in some interactive sobriety tests, including being challenged to try on a pair of beer goggles and walk in a straight line, simulating how alcohol can affect your reactions and impair your ability to drive.

They'll be on hand to give feedback and advice to participants following the tests, with the aim of educating people not just about the dangers of drink and drug driving but also the "Fatal 4" offences - namely speeding, failing to wear a seatbelt, drink driving and using a mobile phone while driving.

It's all part of out joint awareness-raising campaign which has the slogan 'You may like a drink...but no-one likes a drink driver'.

On average 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured each year in a drink drive collision.

During our campaign last December we carried out 654 breath tests, resulting in 140 arrests and investigations.

See our website for information on how to report a drink or drug driver.

Please enjoy the festive period but be safe and sensible.
